Experience-dependent attentional tuning of distractor rejection.

چکیده

Irrelevant salient distractors often capture attention, but given a sufficiently specific search template, these salient items no longer capture attention. In the present experiments, we investigated whether specific target templates are sufficient to resist capture, or whether experience with the salient distractors is also necessary. To test this hypothesis, observers completed four blocks of trials, each with a different-colored irrelevant singleton present on half of the trials. Color singletons captured attention early within a block, but after sufficient experience with the irrelevant singletons, those singletons no longer captured attention in the second halves of the blocks. This result suggests that to resist capture, a specific target template must be accompanied by experience-dependent attentional tuning to distractor properties.

Rejecting salient distractors: Generalization from experience.

Distraction impairs performance of many important, everyday tasks. Attentional control limits distraction by preferentially selecting important items for limited-capacity cognitive operations. Research in attentional control has typically investigated the degree to which selection of items is stimulus-driven versus goal-driven. Recent work finds that when observers initially learn a task, the s...

Experience and distractor rejection 1 Running Head: EXPERIENCE AND DISTRACTOR REJECTION Rejecting salient distractors: Generalization from experience

Distraction harms performance in many important everyday tasks such as driving. Through the application of attentional control, distraction can be limited by directing attention towards important events and away from irrelevant events. Research investigating attentional control has typically asked whether attentional control is stimulus driven or goal driven, but recent work demonstrates that t...

Attentional capture by a perceptually salient non-target facilitates target processing through inhibition and rapid rejection.

Perceptually salient distractors typically interfere with target processing in visual search situations. Here we demonstrate that a perceptually salient distractor that captures attention can nevertheless facilitate task performance if the observer knows that it cannot be the target. Eye-position data indicate that facilitation is achieved by two strategies: inhibition when the first saccade wa...

The attentional boost effect really is a boost: evidence from a new baseline.

In the attentional boost effect, participants encode images into memory as they perform an unrelated target-detection task. Later memory is better for images that coincided with a target rather than a distractor. This advantage could reflect a broad processing enhancement triggered by target detection, but it could also reflect inhibitory processes triggered by distractor rejection. To test the...

Presaccadic target competition attenuates distraction.

Although it is well known that salient nontargets can capture attention despite being task irrelevant, several studies have reported short fixation dwell times, suggesting the presence of an attentional mechanism to "rapidly reject" dissimilar distractors. Rapid rejection has been hypothesized to depend on the strong mismatch between distractor features and the target template, but it is unknow...
